SOME THOUGHTS ON THE FARM CREDIT SUPPLY AgEcon
Dowsett, C.P..
The purpose of this paper is to consider some aspects of the problems of the farm credit supply. It is not intended to be exhaustive in its treatment of a very wide subject that has already been discussed so frequently. It is felt, however, that the recent emphasis on development (rural and other) justifies another look at the subject, especially ill relation to some modifications in the approach to farm credit and the facilities for its supply. Sir John Crawford has said that discussion of the subject of rural credit "easily lends itself to emotion". I shall endeavour to avoid this pitfall. At the outset I would suggest that, for a

Implementing Subject and Its Dynamic Mechanism in New Countryside Construction AgEcon
Zhang, Desheng; Jiao, Yunqiu.
The necessity of taking government as the implementing subject in the construction of new countryside was analyzed from the aspects such as narrowing urban-rural gap, government’s responsibility, connotation and complexity of new countryside construction. Dynamic mechanism of government in the construction of new countryside was discussed, and some problems were introduced. The basic reason of these problems was the deficiency of government’s publicity. Firstly, self-interest of government led to the deviation of public target. Secondly, government was controlled by superior groups, thus benefits of vulnerable groups can’t be ensured. On this basis, establishing an incentive and constraint mechanism for government officers...

Book review Naturalis
NN.
This book is entirely dedicated to the functional role of fungi in all kind of ecosystems, and it attempts to show how the world would function if fungi were not there. It is conceived as an introduction to the subject for students in mycology and ecology. The introductory chapters deal with fundamental themes, and define fungi, ecosystems and their interaction. The two following chapters deal with fungi and primary production, elucidating the way fungi make available nutrients, and the roles symbiotic and parasitic relations play with regards to plant growth and carbon fixation. Chapter 4 gives an overview of secondary productivity: fungi as food for secondary producers, and fungal-faunal interactions such as ant and...

Subjective Experiences of Space and Time: Self, Sensation, and Phenomenal Time Nature Precedings
Ram Lakhan Pandey Vimal.
The investigation of subjective experiences (SEs) of space and time is at the core of consciousness research. The term ‘space’ includes the subject and objects. The SE of subject, I-ness, is defined as ‘Self’. The SEs of objects, subject’s external body, and subject’s internal states such as feelings, thoughts, and so on can be investigated using the proto-experience (PE)-SE framework. The SE of time is defined as ‘phenomenal time’ (which includes past, present and future) and the SE of space as ‘phenomenal...

Algal growth on two sections of a fringing coral reef subject to different levels of eutrophication in Reunion Island ArchiMer
Semple, S.
The temporal Variations in macroalgal coverage and biomass of two sectors of a fringing reef complex in Reunion Island, subject to different levels of nutrient enrichment, were compared over eight months. Little difference was detected in the back reef zone, but in the narrow coral strip zone the highly enriched site showed significantly higher coverage, biomass and diversity of macroalgae throughout the whole study period. Differences in the levels of nutrient enrichment of the reef waters of the two sites are implicated as potential reasons for the observed differences. The seasonal Variations of macroalgae on the reef, and aspects of several of the dominant algal species encountered are also discussed.

Condition and cause in ecological interpretation Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
My colleague Lam, in whose honour this volume is composed, has made it very easy for contributors to find a subject in a field in which he has worked himself. His versatile interest nearly covered the whole of the taxonomy and phylogeny of vascular plants, subjects in theoretical biology, plant morphology, plant geography, and plant ecology. In the latter section his “Fragmenta papuana” contains an inspiring picture of tropical vegetation in correlation with environment. I have pleasure on this occasion in offering some considerations in the field of plant ecology. The subject which I have chosen deals with the way of reasoning when interpreting a correlation found to exist between...

On a collection of Birds from Nias Naturalis
Büttikofer, J..
The island of Nias, the largest of the long series of islands flanking the west coast of Sumatra, and situated at a distance of about 70 miles from the north-west coast of the latter, has, of late, more than once been the subject of zoological investigations. The first intelligence about the avifauna of Nias is due to a visit, paid to that island by Baron von Rosenberg, in 1854. The results of his investigations are published in the Verhandelingen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, Vol. XXX (1863) under the title: Verslag omtrent het eiland Nias en deszelfs bewoners, door J. T. Nieuwenhuisen en H. C. B. von Rosenberg. This report contains, on pp. 19 and 20, a list of 50 species of birds without...
